10. Build a Zipline
Building a zipline is a great kid friendly project. We put one in our backyard. It was a bit of work and took a few tries to get it right but it’s been great. Our zipline has become a topic of conversation at parties & at our kid’s school. Other kids come up to us and ask when they can come over. It’s been a blast.
9. Buy a Swing Set
A swing set is the ultimate kid-friendly backyard project. What kid doesn’t like to swing… Our kids are always drifting off to their swing set and sometimes swing for 10-15 minutes or more, several times a day. Some swing sets can get expensive but you don’t have to go crazy. A few swings set up for the appropriate age and you are good to go. Maybe find a used swing set from a family that wants to get rid of it. Often they are free if you are willing to haul the swing set away.
8. Find Comfortable Adirondack Chairs
We just found four inexpensive adirondack chairs for our backyard and they’ve been great. Our chairs are plastic and weather-proof. It’s been great & very relaxing to grab a drink & chill in our adirondack chairs while watching our kids on the zipline or playing in the back yard.
7. Put Up an Awning, Tent or Umbrella
There’s nothing worse than having a backyard without any shade. If you don’t have many trees or natural shade, buying an awning, tent, gazebo or several umbrellas will make spending time in your back yard much more enjoyable. Cover your sand box, water table or adirondack chairs to create a nice shady spot for you & your kids.
6. Buy a Play House
Our kids had hours of fun a their play house. You don’t need a fancy one like in this picture. Any old play house will do. We had a play log cabin we got for free from a family whose kids had grown. Check yard sales & online forums (craigslist) & yard sales. In the Fall & Spring, families will be looking to get rid of their kids play houses.
